Climate Mayors is a bipartisan network of more than 350 cities, towns, and counties across 47 states and the District of Columbia. Founded in 2014, the peer-to-peer coalition helps members share effective strategies and build support for state and federal action. Together, its members represent more than 70 million residents, 21% of the U.S. population, and account for approximately 25% of national employment and personal income. With nearly $9 trillion in annual GDP, the “Climate Mayors Economy” represents about 30% of the U.S. economy and would rank as the world’s third largest, behind the United States and China. Yet it accounts for only 16% of national fossil fuel use in buildings and transportation.

This study examines how much Climate Mayors members spend on fossil fuels, how that spending has changed, and how continued climate action could affect future costs and household affordability. It combines local fuel-consumption estimates from Crosswalk Labs, price and consumption data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, regional economic accounts from IMPLAN, and household impacts modeled using AFFORD, Greenline Insights’ affordability model. The analysis finds that the Climate Mayors Economy spends less on fuel per capita than the rest of the country, has reduced fuel costs over time, and could realize substantial economic gains through continued action over the next decade.
